Through the Eyes of a Sailing Enthusiast: Hidden Paradises and Unforgettable Memories in Fethiye
Waking up to the sun's warm touch and heeding the call of turquoise waters that morning, I was moments away from being enchanted by Fethiye's magic. Every cove I discovered during my sailing holiday offered me the purest essence of the Mediterranean and Aegean. Here are Fethiye's hidden gems and those magical moments I experienced, through the eyes of a sea lover...
Why Fethiye?
The ideal period for sailing enthusiasts in Turkey is from April to November. We went in mid-June; the weather was warm but cooled by the meltem winds, while the sea was smooth as silk. From raising sails at dawn, to swimming breaks at Butterfly Valley in the afternoon, and sunset at Gemiler Island in the evening - every moment brought new excitement.
Our Route and Unforgettable Coves
-
Cold Water Bay: A Refreshing Miracle
This natural jacuzzi with its icy spring waters from the Taurus Mountains was incredible. Jumping off the boat into the cold water flowing beneath our feet in the summer heat was indescribable. "We must have Turkish coffee here!" we said, setting up our kettle on the rocks. -
Kapı Bay: Tavern Delights
The sound of music drew us here. At a small tavern, we enjoyed freshly caught octopus and olive oil mezes while chatting with local fishermen. That famous "Kapı Bay evening" everyone talks about became one of our warmest memories. -
Little Sarsala: Like a Painting
I saw every shade of turquoise here. At the family-run restaurant ashore, we ordered grilled eggplant and samphire. The water was so clear we lost track of time watching fish schools beneath our boat. -
Çiftlik Bay: Beauty in Simplicity
This was the maritime embodiment of "less is more." We lounged on the pebbly beach, listening to the waves. Perfect for families - children can swim safely in the shallow waters.
Our Boat: A Traditional Gulet
Our 35-meter wooden gulet spoiled us with all its comforts. Sunbathing on deck, sipping tea while watching our route from the wheelhouse, stargazing at night... The crew's breakfasts (fresh simit, olives, cheese varieties) and evening fish feasts were the icing on the cake.
Sailing Tips for Fethiye
✔ Mind the Wind: The meltem strengthens in the afternoon. Set sail early and take midday breaks in coves.
✔ Local Flavors: Don't miss fresh fish, village eggs, and olive oil dishes in every cove.
✔ Boat Choice: Choose a gulet (spacious) for families, or a motor yacht (speed/practicality) for couples/small groups.
Final Words: "We'll Definitely Be Back!"
A sailing holiday in Fethiye isn't just a trip - it's a privilege. When friends asked "Do these coves really exist?" upon my return, I wasn't surprised. If you dream of a "Blue Cruise," Fethiye and its hidden coves await!
